A credential no system can read does not appear in any shortlist assembled by a system.
Every regulated operator has the wall. Certificates, licences, accreditations, the logos of the bodies that issued them. It represents years of audits and real money, and it is genuinely the thing that qualifies the business to bid.
Then it gets put on a website as a row of small grey images in a footer, and it stops existing.
A certification is a claim with a verifier attached. That is its whole value — not that you say you meet a standard, but that a named third party assessed you against it and will confirm so.
When that becomes a logo image, every part of the structure is lost. The issuing body is not named in any form a machine can resolve. The scope is not stated. The date is not stated. What remains is a picture, and a picture asserts nothing.
To a retrieval system, a certification logo is a decorative image. Your strongest differentiator, rendered as wallpaper.
This matters more than it used to, because the shortlist is increasingly assembled before a human is involved. A procurement officer filtering suppliers, or a language model asked which operators in a category hold a particular accreditation, is performing a match against declared attributes. An operator whose accreditations are declared gets matched. An operator whose accreditations are decorative does not get rejected — it is never a candidate.
The reason this persists is that the offline version works fine.
In a physical bid, certifications travel as documents. You attach them to the proposal, the evaluator reads the PDF, the credential does its job. Nobody has ever needed the website to carry that weight, so nobody noticed when the buying process moved earlier — to a stage that happens before anyone requests documents.
Which produces a specific and expensive gap: the operator is fully compliant, fully documented, and completely unable to demonstrate it at the moment the field is narrowed.
A biosecurity, sanitation and plant-management operation is a good test case, because in that category the certifications are the product. Nobody hires a sanitation contractor on brand affinity. They hire on demonstrated compliance, because the buyer inherits the risk.
The operational reality was substantial: real coverage, real scale, real accreditation. The digital reality was a site that a buyer could not distinguish from a two-person crew with a van, and that no automated pre-qualification could classify at all.
Nothing about the business needed fixing. What needed fixing was that the evidence of the business existed in a form that only worked once you were already in the conversation.
Making a credential legible is unglamorous and mostly mechanical:
Name it in text. The certification, the issuing body, the scope and the period, as words in the document rather than pixels in an image. If the only place your ISO number appears is inside a JPEG, it does not appear.
Encode it as structured data. Certifications, licences and accreditations have schema representations. The issuing organisation becomes a resolvable entity rather than a brand you happen to display.
State the scope precisely. “Certified” is weak. Certified by whom, against which standard, covering which operations, valid through when. Precision is what makes it verifiable, and verifiable is what makes it worth having.
Keep the logos. They do real work for the human reader. The mistake was never showing them — it was showing them instead of the data.
Open your own site and search the page source for the name of your primary certifying body. Not the logo file — the name, as text.
If it does not appear, then for every system that assembles a shortlist, you do not hold that certification.
The audits were real. The money was real. The only thing missing is the twenty minutes it takes to say so in a form that something other than a person can read.
